One of my big purposes for visiting LA this time was to revisit the cemetery where my greatgrand uncle’s ashes had been kept for a long time. There was this greatgrand uncle of mime, my greatgrandfather’s brother, who came to the US before the WWII and lived here in LA for a long time. However, my family lost contact during the WWII and it was my grandfather’s wish that someone would find him someday. In my childhood my grandfather and my mother used to tell me this story every so often, and it had been my future hope that I would try to find him someday. In August of 1980, I finally got a chance to study at a university in New York. Thus, on my way to New York, I flew to LA with a hope to carry out my family mission. To make a long story short, I managed to find the death certificate of my greatgrand uncle at the LA city office after a long struggle with paper documents and I finally succeeded to trace his place; the cemetary where his ashes were kept. Inside his box I found a newspaper clip announcing his death. According to its article, one of his friends from the same hometown was supposed to bring him home; however, the friend seems to have passed away before he could fulfill his mission. To my surprise the necessary document to send the ashes back to Japan was all ready: thanks to the friend, and it was just siting there as if it was waiting for someone to take over the mission! So I signed my name on the document and his ashes were sent back home! Later, in New York, I received a letter from my mother telling me that his ashes arrived home on the first day of Obon, the period when the spirit of ancestors is believed to return home in Japan. It has been 35 years since then.
